Who are you? What is your involvement in basketball?
My name is Toni Carvill, I am one of the head coaches at Glasgow City basketball club. My role is to bring more female players to our club and I’m also in charge of the U16 & U18 National League teams along with the development of our U12’s & U14’s.
Why did you want to become a coach? What motivates you to keep doing it?
I coach because I love helping young people. I started coaching at the age of 16 while still playing, this helped my game dramatically as I started noticing different things, as I was looking at them from a different perspective. My coach Mick Mckechnie helped change my life with basketball when I was younger and this inspired me to try and do the same. This is why, almost 20 years later, I’m still coaching and loving every minute of it.
Tell us about a female role model who has inspired you?
My female role models growing up were my mum and my coach Shirley. My mum always told me that I can achieve anything I put my mind to. Shirley showed me that being tough on people and pushing their limits is a good thing as it shows discipline and helps focus on what you want to achieve. Now my role models are my kids, I want to show them that they can do whatever they want and nothing can stop them from achieving that.
