It was a busy basketball Saturday at Easterhouse last weekend. We partnered with Glasgow Life, Easterhouse Sports Centre and Glasgow Basketball Community to run a day of 3X3 across senior and under 18 age groups. A chance to sharpen up for the new season. A chance to play with pals from other teams. A chance to win prizes. A range of motivations for the 97 players but all enjoying a day of competitive basketball and the opportunity to show off some skills.

There were teams from “traditional clubs”, such as Fife Steel, Gladiators and Glasgow Devils. There were also some very creative names, Rim Reapers and Slam Hunks deserve special mention.

Perhaps guilty of copyright infringement it was the Flint Tropics who proved the team to beat in the Senior Open competition. Rumours of an appearance from Will Ferrell were unfounded. Meanwhile, Woody Harrelson and Andre 3000 were absent through injury. It was those with a minor role in the 2008 film Semi Pro that turned up: Scott Angus-Harkin, Euan Ritchie, Illia Niemtsu and Miles Felletti. They had the quality to win the Senior Open competition, taking care of A=FC Squared in the final.

Players who normally play for North Lanarkshire Chiefs and Basketball Paisley were victorious in the Men’s Under 18 competition. Calling themselves Bigzzz, Daniel Oliver, Gavin Mitchell, Gregor Davidson and Ryan McNeil overturned a defeat in their first game to beat Too big on tour by a point in the final.

Meanwhile, it was the Beefers who took home the Women Under 18 title with a 13 – 6 win over Gladiators in the final. Congratulations to Sophie Heron, Ruby Smock, Hayden Watson and Holly Welch.

Excitement in all 76 games across the day and a buzz around Easterhouse Sports Centre throughout. We will keep you posted on upcoming 3X3 events across Scotland.
