Welcome to our 75th Anniversary
As we move into 2022, we mark the start of basketballscotland’s 75th Anniversary celebrations and invite you to join us in looking back over the people and events that have shaped our game.
In 1947, basketball was a young sport in Scotland, but already being played by both males and females. But that year would see several landmarks for the sport: the establishment of our predecessor organisation, the Amateur Basketball Association of Scotland, the first Scottish Cup and the first International match, all coming in that year!
We want to take this year to celebrate and connect with our sport’s rich history, which is not only about the male and female running game, but also the introduction of wheelchair basketball to Scotland. We want to recognise and connect with those who have played a part in developing the sport we love and those who have excelled in our sport and put Scotland on the world basketball map. We want to look back at some of the fantastic moments in Scottish Basketball history and share stories from the basketball community.
We also want to look forward to the next 25 years and beyond, taking inspiration from the amazing achievements of the past and continuing to develop the positive impact our sport has on people throughout the country.
Now is a great time to look back, as well as to look forward. Although the pandemic is likely to continue to cast a shadow over this season, we have come together as a sport during this national emergency in ways we could previously only dream of. The 75th Anniversary provides an opportunity to build on this important sense of community, which we believe will be the foundation for our achievements to come. In order to carry out this celebration, we will need your help!
We are inviting you, the basketball community, to share the stories and memories that have shaped the sport, and to help us recognise the people who shaped our game over the years.
If you haven’t already, we encourage you to take a look at the Scottish Basketball Through the Years Facebook Page– which has thousands of memories and photos already shared by the community – and add your stories, photos and memories. Other social media platforms where the sport is active can also be used, such as Twitter and Instagram, using the hashtag #basketballscotland75.
The focal point of the year will be the 75th Anniversary dinner in Edinburgh’s EICC on 18 June 2022, which will see the launch of the Scottish Basketball Hall of Fame. We hope this will be an opportunity for members of the basketball community, both past and present, to connect and reminisce.
We hope you will help us take a look back over the last 75 years, celebrate what the sport has achieved, and to look ahead to a positive future!
Yours in basketball,
