basketballscotland is saddened to learn of the recent passing of Ian Tasker at the age of 88-years-old.
Ian, with his love of sport clear to see, is an important figure in the development of basketball in Scotland. From 1965 to 1973, Ian was Chair of the North of Scotland Basketball Association. During this time, he was a founding member of the Inverness Basketball Club and was a fundamental figure in forming the Inverness Ladies Basketball club in 1970.
In 1968, Ian was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Amateur Basketball Association of Scotland (known today as basketballscotland) and, despite being based in Inverness, would make regular journeys to Edinburgh for committee meetings to help guide the sport.
Outside of his basketball duties, Ian worked for the Inverness Courier, where he regularly wrote articles about basketball in the Highlands, helping to ensure that the game and its successes were known by many.
Basketball was not Ian’s only love, as he made a name for himself as a sprints and jumps athlete during his impressive competitive career. He also served as an official at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and was Chair of the North of Scotland Athletics Association.
basketballscotland would like to passing on our condolences to Ian’s family and friends during this difficult time.
