World’s first Jr. NBA Wheelchair League to tip off this month.

Following on from the announcement of plans to launch the world’s first Jr. NBA Wheelchair League back in May, basketballscotland are proud to confirm the program is set to tip off later this month.

Jr. NBA is the NBA’s global youth basketball programme for boys and girls. The program teaches fundamental basketball skills, as well as the core values of the game, at the grassroots level to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents. The NBA reaches more than 18 million young players in over 50 countries through its youth participation initiatives.

The format of the league will see two rounds of games at a central venue, followed by Semi-Finals and a Final, the latter of which will be played alongside the other league’s Final Fours. Four teams from across Scotland will compete in the league.

basketballscotland have been supported by a number of Scottish wheelchair clubs to deliver the league, with Grampian Flyers, Dundee Dragons and Lothian Phoenix all committing to assisting in the delivery of the fixtures.

Tina Gordon, basketballscotland’s Disability Talent & Pathways Manager, is excited for the program to get started after a busy summer of planning:

“We are delighted to be hosting the first Jr. NBA Wheelchair League in Scotland. This is an exciting development for our young players, and I know they will be inspired to take their basketball onto great heights.”

The Jr. NBA program is the latest addition to Scotland’s wheelchair basketball successes, with a youth national league launched for the first time in 2019, whilst Scottish athletes were medallists at both the Men’s and Women’s European Championships throughout the summer.
