For this week’s SBC Game of the Week we will be in Edinburgh on Saturday to watch Edinburgh University play host to Glasgow University in an important fixture for Edinburgh University to secure their place in the Playoffs, as well as a must-win for Glasgow University to stay in the top flight.
The hosts this week, Edinburgh University currently sit in 8th position in the league with a 4-12 record with 2 more games left before the Playoffs. Along with their fixture against Glasgow University, they also play Pleasance the following day which will determine their seedings going into the Playoffs.
We caught up with head coach of Edinburgh University, Achilleas Chatzitheocharis who had the following to say about the team’s season and the focus heading into Saturday’s game;
“It’s been a challenging season but we are still fighting for a couple of good results to end it. Injuries and withdrawals of players have left us with a very small team. We need to draw the maximum of our strength for the two remaining games. I have faith in the players and their ability to overcome difficulties.”
We also caught up with Edinburgh University’s Cameron O’Donnell who had the following to say ahead of the fixture;
“We’ve played them in BUCS and we’ve had a couple of convincing wins against them already this year, so we’re kind of looking to finish the season on a better note than the last few games. We’re looking to control our side of the game by limiting turnovers and empty possessions. We’re looking forward to a good game though as we know they’ve got some good pieces in their team and won’t be giving us anything easy.”
After just falling short against City of Edinburgh by three points and losing at the hands St. Mirren the following week, any chances of reaching the playoffs were dashed for Glasgow University. As mentioned, Pleasance will play Edinburgh University on Sunday. Therefore, on the chance that Pleasance defeat Edinburgh University on that day, Glasgow University also need a win against Edinburgh University to secure their place in Division 1 next season.
Edinburgh University will play host to Glasgow University on Saturday the 24th of February at 12:20pm in St. Leonard’s land.
