basketballscotland recently hosted its inaugural Girls Only Camp. The camp, which saw 50 talented young athletes from across Scotland attend, aimed to provide an inclusive and supportive environment where girls could develop their basketball skills, experience high-performance training, and build lasting friendships.
The camp was held at the sportscotland National Sports Training Centre Inverclyde in Largs, a facility boasting state-of-the-art amenities for multiple sports. With indoor courts, fully equipped strength and conditioning facilities, and excellent accessible accommodation, the centre provided everything necessary for the athletes to excel. The cafeteria offered tailored meal options, ensuring athletes were well-fuelled for their high-intensity training sessions. Meeting rooms and a gym complemented the indoor court, supporting both on-court and off-court activities comprehensively.
“A brilliant week from start to finish – great coaching, fantastic facilities and a brilliant group of girls to share the experience with.”
“It was so fun getting to play with each other and fun to have different coaching styles to help me improve”
Our team of experienced coaches, including some of Scotland’s top female basketball players and coaches, was on hand to share their knowledge and deliver high-quality training and mentorship. The players were introduced to advanced techniques, new skills, and the importance of teamwork, all within a fun and engaging atmosphere. basketballscotland’s Skills Development Coach, Kerri Kuzbyt, was joined by Leah Stewart, former Scotland youth national team player who is now coaching top level basketball in Spain, to lead the on-court activities. Caledonia Gladiators player Robyn Lewis attended the camp to deliver Strength and Conditioning sessions to the young players and share her experiences as a professional player. The athletes also had Zoom calls with nutritionist Franziska Hadaschik and Scots Pollyanna Storie, who is playing Division 1 college basketball in Canada, and Donna Finnie, the first international NCAA Division 1 coach in America, where they could learn about their basketball journey’s and ask questions.
“She learned so much on and off court, which we will share with the girls in her club team. Along with putting lots of new drills into practice!”
One of the camp’s highlights was the final day, when the girls showcased their newly acquired skills in a series of friendly games that their families were able to watch. This provided an opportunity for them to demonstrate their progress and for us to celebrate their achievements.
Overall, the Girls Only Camp was a tremendous success, fostering growth, skill development, and camaraderie among the participants. basketballscotland is proud to have provided this valuable experience and is dedicated to supporting young female athletes across the country.
