Katie McPherson
Who are you? What is your involvement in basketball?
I am Katie McPherson and I am Head of Community Coaching at City of Edinburgh Basketball Club. Along with this I am the head coach of the Kings U16 boys program that play in the in the North Premier League in England. I am also the first female to coach on the male side of the Scottish National Squads assisting with the Scotland U16 boys this year.
Why did you want to become a coach? What motivates you to keep doing it?
I coach because basketball has been such an enjoyable feature in my life and I love to see that enjoyment replicated in the children’s lives when they are playing.
The improvements and developments in the players’ skill and basketball intelligence on the court, along with their maturity and attitudes off the court is what motivates me to continue every day.
Tell us about a female role model who has inspired you?
I think every female who has been involved in basketball around me has inspired me and been a role model at some stage.
From the only female coaches I had whilst I was a youth at Polonia Phoenix right through to my fellow Senior Women players at Kats and the fantastic coaches, team managers and committee members at City of Edinburgh Basketball Club.
Being able to balance work, family and basketball is an incredible achievement.
Having strong females around pushing the boundaries of what can be done is what inspires me every day to continue and try and make a new path for the future females coming through.
