Female PickUp hubs launch for 19/20

With the 2019/20 basketball season under way across Scotland, basketballscotland’s new Female PickUp Basketball project, promoting recreational basketball for women and girls, has launched weekly sessions across the country.

PickUp Basketball is recreational basketball with a focus on socialising, having fun and getting active. Sessions are aimed at those wishing to try the sport for the first time, improve physical activity levels and make new friends, all in a safe and welcoming environment. It is also a great way for those who have been out of the game for a while to get back involved in a relaxed setting.

In partnership with clubs and local authorities, sessions will be delivered across the country for both women and teenage girls. At present, seven PickUp sessions are available across Scotland, with plans to extend the number to 20 over the coming months. Currently sessions are held in Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Dunfermline.

As part of the launch, basketballscotland has developed a new look for the Female PickUp sessions, making the logo and session posters easily identifiable for those looking to attend.

Sarah Christie, who attends the Stirling PickUp each week, enjoys both the social and playing side of the sessions:

“I have loved coming along to PickUp basketball. I love the group of women that I’ve met and get to hang out with every week. I’ve also loved learning about basketball and developing different skills. I think it has made a positive impact on my wellbeing. It’s a really great environment and a really great sport.”
