Jr.NBA | Wheelchair League

In May 2019, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and basketballscotland announced that the world’s first ever Jr.NBA Wheelchair Basketball League would debut in Scotland during the 2019-20 season. In line with the overall strategy of basketballscotland to embed wheelchair basketball throughout our programmes, the league was incorporated within the existing Jr. NBA programme, sharing the same Draft and Finals events. In its first year, basketballscotland was supported by a number of Scottish wheelchair clubs to deliver the league.

Jr.NBA is the NBA’s global youth basketball programme which teaches fundamental basketball skills and core values of the game, to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents.

Speaking at the time, NBA’s EMEA Associate Vice President, Basketball Operations, Neal Meyer commented “We are thrilled to announce the first-ever Jr.NBA Wheelchair Basketball League along with the expanded Jr.NBA basketballscotland League These leagues allow us to reach even more children around the country, providing them with a fun, competitive environment in which to engage with the sport and learn about the values the Jr.NBA embodies like teamwork, respect and community.”

“We are very excited about the expansion and are looking forward to continuing our partnership with the NBA.” said basketballscotland CEO Kevin Pringle. “The chance to pilot a wheelchair basketball league in Scotland and expand to new regions is a fantastic opportunity to reach more children and ensure the programme is fully inclusive.”

The wheelchair league will return for its second time at the beginning of the 2021/2022 season having been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. View our 2019/20 wheelchair draft video here

We have a fantastic opportunity for one company or organisation to support up to 3,000 young people to play basketball in Scotland, while aligning with one of the most famous sports brands in the world – the NBA.
