Three Scots will be flying to Helsinki later this month to represent Great Britain at The Federal International Maxibasketball Association (FIMBA) World MaxiBasketball Championships.
Shirley Campbell, Elaine Brechin Montgomery and Ann Jamieson have all been named as part of the GB squad which will compete in the Female over 40 category at the tournament.
Taking place between July 25th and August 4th, the team will be competing against a team from Russia and Germany in the group stages. The F40 category is expected to be highly competitive, with teams from Germany, Finland, Russia, Mexico, Ireland, Colombia and more all taking part.
During the tournament teams will compete in 17 different categories, with Women’s teams in age groups from 30-65 and Men’s teams from 35-80. The oldest category, Men over 80, has five teams competing from across the world.
FIMBA was founded 50 years go in Argentina as a group of ex-players looked to continue enjoying basketball after they retired from the sport. During the 1970s and 80s the sport spread across South America, with the first World Championships being held in 1991.
July’s World Championships will be the 15th time the event has been held, with Shirley, Elaine and Ann hopeful of a successful tournament.
