Playing Our Part

The Scottish Government is urging Scotland’s sporting system to play its part in helping stop the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic after cases have more than doubled in Scotland in the last week – one of the sharpest rises we have seen during the pandemic.

While significant progress has been made to weaken the link between new cases and serious health harms through the vaccination programme, Scotland’s health and care service is under significant pressure and there is a risk that if the surge continues or accelerates some restrictions may have to be re-introduced.

basketballscotland will therefore be launching our ‘Playing Our Part” campaign to remind the community of everything we can be doing to protect ourselves and others and help stop the spread of the virus. These reminders will feature on our social media over the upcoming weeks. Here are some examples of what you can be doing:

  1. When indoors all participants, visitors and spectators should wear face coverings before and after activity or when in non-playing areas of the facility. (unless medically exempt)
  2. Keeping a register of participants at each session for track and trace purposes.
  3. Continue to clean shared equipment. Our shared equipment cleaning guidance can be found here
  4. Regularly sanitising your hands before, after and during quarters of games, and during intervals at training.

Chief Executive of sportscotland, Stewart Harris, commented: “The pandemic has presented undoubted challenges to all walks of society, including the sport and physical activity sector, but we have made progress in recent months due to the hard work and commitment of everyone involved. Scotland’s sporting system has played a significant role in the fight against the virus, and I am grateful for the leadership the sector has shown.

There has been a real shared commitment to doing the right thing during what has been the most difficult time ever for our sector. It hasn’t been easy but those involved in sport and physical activity in Scotland have time and time again met the challenge head on.

It is clear we are far from out of the woods due to the recent rise in cases but by showing that same leadership that we have shown all along and by continuing to do the right thing we will play our part in ensuring we continue to make the progress we all want to see.”
